Condanniamo ogni attacco alle strutture sanitarie, come il recente bombardamento all’ospedale di Khan Yunis a Gaza, e chiediamo all’ONU e ai nostri Governi nazionali di chiedere con forza ai Governi belligeranti di salvaguardare, nei luoghi teatro di guerra, i malati e i feriti, nonché il personale medico e infermieristico, gli ospedali e le strutture sanitarie mobili, secondo i dettami delle Convenzioni di Ginevra.
A Gaza, come in Ucraina, in Sud Sudan e in altri conflitti attivi nel mondo, vi sono violazioni sistematiche delle convenzioni internazionali: è assolutamente intollerabile che gli operatori sanitari e gli ammalati, che già soffrono per le loro patologie, da esseri umani inermi possano essere oggetto di attacchi militari.
Siamo fortemente preoccupati per i medici che lavorano negli ospedali e nelle agenzie internazionali, perché sono esposti ad attacchi militari, mettendo a rischio la propria vita. A loro esprimiamo la nostra vicinanza, la nostra solidarietà, e il nostro ringraziamento perché sono i veri testimoni della pace in tempo di guerra.
Invitiamo al rispetto delle Convenzioni di Ginevra, in particolare dell’articolo 18 della Convenzione di Ginevra n° 4 che recita: “Gli ospedali civili organizzati per prestare cure ai feriti, ai malati, agli infermi e alle puerpere non potranno, in nessuna circostanza, essere fatti segno ad attacchi; essi saranno, in qualsiasi tempo, rispettati e protetti dalle Parti belligeranti”.
Il nostro appello alle parti belligeranti – nel ricordo vivo delle testimonianze nel recente convegno di Dakovo (Croazia) sui medici in tempo di guerra – è a non considerare gli ospedali scenari di guerra, ma luoghi di cura e a rispettare sempre il personale sanitario e i malati, e a consentire lo sblocco degli aiuti umanitari e delle forniture di farmaci e materiali sanitari.

Doctors as witnesses of peace in places of war
We condemn all attacks on health facilities, such as the recent bombing of the Khan Yunis hospital in Gaza, and call on the UN and our national governments to strongly urge the belligerent governments to safeguard the sick and wounded, as well as medical and nursing staff, hospitals and mobile health facilities, in war-torn places, in accordance with the dictates of the Geneva Conventions.
In Gaza, as in the Ukraine, South Sudan and other conflicts around the world, there are systematic violations of international conventions: it is absolutely intolerable that health workers and the sick, who are already suffering from their illnesses, from defenceless human beings can be subjected to military attacks.
We are deeply concerned about doctors working in hospitals and international agencies, because they are exposed to military attacks, putting their lives at risk. To them we express our closeness, our solidarity, and our thanks because they are the true witnesses of peace in times of war.
We call for respect for the Geneva Conventions, in particular Article 18 of Geneva Convention No. 4, which states: “Civil hospitals organised to provide care for the wounded, the sick, the infirm and nursing mothers shall not, under any circumstances, be attacked; they shall, at all times, be respected and protected by the belligerent Parties”.
Our appeal to the belligerent parties – in the vivid memory of the testimonies at the recent conference in Dakovo (Croatia) on doctors in times of war – is to consider hospitals not as settings for war, but as places of care, and to always respect medical personnel and the sick, and to allow the release of humanitarian aid and supplies of medicines and medical supplies.
